About the show: In the middle ages of Japan, in a poor village located at the intermountain, people of age 70 must go to Mt. Narayama to accept their own deaths. It is the sad knowledge for survival.
Orin, a 69-year-old woman, succeeded in welcoming a new wife for her pious son, Tatsuhei, and she is ready to climb Narayama, but her teeth are her only discomfort. In the starving village, having well-set teeth is considered a shame. Three days before New Year’s Day, the 70th year for Orin, she secretly goes towards the top of the mountain carried by Tatsuhei’s back.
About tearu: In April 1980, Theater Company 1980 was established by alumni of the Yokohama Academy of Broadcasting and Film (currently the Japan Institute of the Moving Image), led by the playwright and director Den Fujita. Since then, the company has been creating scenic art works with the inner themes of “Japan” and “Japanese”, which are strongly fixed by Fujita.
The Gekidanichikyo-Hachimaru 1980 Theatre Company had succeeded overseas performances (ten times in Europe, twice in Korea and Brazil) and is known as one of the most international theatre companies in Japan.
