"Eugène Ionesco" theater biennial - BITEI
In 1994, the first International Theater Festival in Moldova, the "EUGÈNE IONESCO" THEATER BIENNAL — BITEI, with the title PLANET IONESCO, being dedicated to the dramaturgy of Eugène Ionesco. This festival brings together under its auspices the most diverse theater collectives, which do not hesitate to challenge, to experiment, to ask uncomfortable questions. Over time, the festival has become a beautiful tradition of local theatrical life.
The second edition of the festival (1997) took place under the banner TRADITION AND MODERNITY.
The third edition (1999) was titled MEETINGS AT THE END OF THE CENTURY.
The fourth edition (2001) took place under the title INTERFERENCES.
In 2003, the fifth edition of the Festival took place under the title THEATER WITHOUT BORDERS.
In 2004, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the death of the great Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, the sixth edition of the Festival took place - PLANETA CEHOV.
The seventh edition of BITEA, with the title BETWEEN EAST AND WEST, took place in 2006.
Starting with the eighth edition that took place in 2008 and took place under the INTERSECTIONS banner, the BITEI Festival widens its scope and becomes a Theater Festival - Festival of Scenic Arts.

The ninth edition of the BITEI festival (2010) was held under the banner FOR A BETTER WORLD. Commenting on the chosen generic, Petru Vutcarau, the Director of BITEI, emphasized that society is oversaturated with negative energies, and cultured people, living in a world of beauty and feeding from this inexhaustible source, want, through the International Festival of Performing Arts, to create an oasis of beauty, to cultivate the artistic taste among the spectators, to emphasize beauty. The 2010 edition of the festival opened with the show "The Nutcracker" by P. Tchaikovsky, staged by the well-known choreographer Radu Poclitaru from the Modern Theater - Ballet in Kiev.
The option for quality was defining in the selection of the shows that were presented in the 9th edition of BITEA. This is one of the largest theatrical events in the Republic of Moldova which brought together about 540 participants from Romania, Ukraine, Sweden, Russia, Estonia, Hungary, Georgia, India, Ireland, Turkey, Japan, Spain, the Republic of Moldova.
For the first time in the sixteen years since the festival has existed, the "Eugene Ionesco" Theater did not present any show during the Biennale, because the stage in the new headquarters of TEI is under repair. This venue hosted a single dance performance, press conferences were also held here with the participation of the artists invited to the festival.
Traditionally, the festival program includes three sections: Theatre, Music, Dance. Within these sections, dramatic theater performances, modern dance performances, puppet theater, music and folk dance are performed. The director of BITEI is the director Petru Vutcarau, the artistic director of the "Eugene Ionesco" Theatre. BITEI also has a trophy, called the Golden Eye and represents the Goddess of the Performing Arts. The trophy is handed to the theaters participating in the festival. Debates are held during the festival, meetings are held with theater people, personalities, guests, invited to the festival.
